Establishment of Paternity
Paternity is the legal establishment of the father of a child.
Once paternity is established, the father will have certain legal rights and responsibilities such as custody/visitation and child support. If the parents were married when the child was born, the the husband is typically presumed to be the father. When a child is born out-of-wedlock, paternity may be established if the parents sign a Voluntary Declaration of Paternity before leaving the hospital where the child was born. In unmarried situations, paternity or parentage can also be established through the Local Child Support Agency or through the courts. Cases in which paternity is challenged or disputed, paternity testing can be done through DNA or genetic testing.
