Family Law Facilitator and The Family Law Facilitator Office
What is a Family Law Facilitator? Each California Superior Court should have an attorney or family law facilitator office (sometimes called the family court clinic) that can assist you with your family law issues for free. These attorneys are commonly referred to as "family law facilitators." Some family law facilitator offices have both attorneys and paralegals on staff to provide assistance.

What a Family Law Facilitator Can Do
The services provide by each family law facilitator offices can vary. In some counties the family law facilitator can show you how to fill out court forms, help you with your dissolution or divorce or child custody issues while others do not. Some counties limit the family law facilitator services to child support issues, spousal support issues and protracted health insurance cases. A family law facilitator can however meet with you individually and provide you with family law information and assistance.

What a Family Law Facilitator Can Not Do
A family law facilitator cannot be your attorney and the family law facilitator does not provide legal advice. There is no attorney-client relationship between you and the family law facilitator. When you speak with the family law facilitator, your conversation may not be private or confidential. If the family law facilitator is subpoenaed to court there is no attorney-client privilege that would protect your conversation and make it confidential. Because the family law facilitator is available to the public they can equally help you and the other party.

A family law facilitator can often point you in the direction of help such as to lawyer referral services, legal aid clinics and self-help law centers.
